Consulting for Universities
For universities in Germany as well as in other countries we offer consulting in all areas of personnel and student selection.
According to the seventh amendment to the German “Hochschulrahmengesetz” (framework law governing higher education in Germany) the public universities themselves now grant sixty percent of the places in those degree programmes that have country-wide admission retrictions. This change represents a further important step towards encouraging autonomy among the institutions of higher education and the development of individual profiles for the institutions in that area.
For the universities, however, greater autonomy also brings about the obligation to introduce sensible admission procedures. We advise universities on designing such procedures.
The “Hochschulrahmengesetz” determines the criteria which may be employed in the selection of applicants:
- Average grade on school-leaving certificate
- Weighted individual grades in the school-leaving certificate, providing information on aptitude for a specific field
- Result of a field-specific test of aptitude for university study
- Type of completed vocational training or employment experience
- Result of a selection interview designed to provide insight into the applicant's motivation for the subject chosen and the profession envisioned, as well as to correct false impressions and expectations.
- or a combination of these criteria.
The admission decision is to be based to a significant degree on the average school-leaving grade. The remaining criteria can be applied by the individual faculties as deemed sensible, unless otherwise stipulated by federal state regulations.
The development of admission procedures which are fair for all applicants, allow the selection of those best suited and, at the same time, make economic use of the scarce resources, procedures which furthermore contribute to the formation of the individual university's profile and makes that university an attractive place for applicants – this is a challenge we have already met successfully with a great number of public and private institutes of higher education. We would be glad to place our experience at your disposal.
